Project Outcome

A generic nursing competencies assessment tool will be developed, rating newly graduating Registered Nurses against the ANMC regulatory competencies and employer competencies regarding ‘reasonable’ expectations of new nursing graduates. This tool will be available to all nursing schools across Australia, and could also be used for the assessment of overseas qualified nurses seeking registration in Australia.

Project Methodology

The project will generate an assessment schedule (content and process) using the ANMC competencies and a Delphi regarding ‘reasonable expectations of new graduates in nursing’. Phase 1a will involve a literature review on technical skills in nursing practice and an audit of the lists of technical skills outlined in curriculum documents of nursing schools in Australia and New Zealand. This will lead to an all-inclusive list of technical skills via a comparison of the content of the various lists. This will form the basis of a Delphi survey, seeking input from nurse educators and clinicians Australia-wide to identify and agree to ‘reasonable expectations’ of technical skills for newly graduating nurses. Simultaneously, Phase 1b will be conducted which will entail an update of an existing systematic literature review of on competencies and competency assessment, followed by an evaluation of current clinical assessment documents and processes (including other disciplines) from Australian universities. These phases will be merged to formulate one assessment tool.
