Project Outcome

The purpose of this project is to build the capacity of speech pathology academic and clinical education leaders to integrate COMPASS™, a newly developed competency based assessment tool, within their learning, teaching and assessment practices in curriculum across 13 higher education programs, using assessment of work-integrated learning as a focus.

Project Methodology

This 1.5 year project takes a strategic approach using a three layer ?cross level? implementation process, working collaboratively with speech pathology academic leaders, university employed clinical educators, speech pathologists in the field who provide clinical education, and speech pathology students.

The approach is collaborative both with reference to the core research team (involving four Universities offering six of the thirteen speech pathology programs in Australia), and participatory in its involvement of a further five Universities offering the other seven speech pathology programs nationally as additional sites for the project, and the inclusion of the professional association within the Reference Group. Site visits, meetings, and teleconferencing will be used to facilitate training in this approach to assessment, and to evaluate its impact on curriculum development, teaching and learning. The project facilitates the embedding of this approach to assessment within university speech pathology programs and within the professional discipline.
