Project Outcome

The outcome of this project is to design and implement an academic leadership development program for course coordinators which enhances their leadership capabilities, enables them to improve course quality, strengthens peer relationships, and ultimately improves the students? learning experiences in higher education.

Project Methodology

A distributed leadership model will be used to build leadership capacity of current and prospective course leaders across the range of academic discipline areas, initially within the lead partner university. The methodology for the academic leadership program will include participation in:

  • pre-course activities;
  • the academic leadership program; and
  • post-course activities.
The program itself will be developed as a series of learning modules around three key themes ofacademic leadership:

  • personal leadership development;conceptual understandings of academicleadership and the knowledge required;and
  • skill development.
A blended learning model approach will be adopted using flexible delivery provision to increase the programs ability to involve staff in a range of contexts (including regional and off-shore campuses).
Each module will incorporate e-learning educational activities as learning objects situated within a learning management system which can be adapted for use across the Australian higher education sector.

The program will be able to be packaged in a variety of ways to suit the professional learning needs of the participating universities, and individual academic staff and to articulate with Graduate Certificates in Tertiary Education or other qualifications (eg MBA).
