Project Outcome

The outcomes of the project will be:

  1. Improved processes for the planning, analysis, implementation and review of assessment policy in Australian universities;
  2. Improved policies relating to assessment; and
  3. Improved assessment practices resulting from these policies.

Project Methodology

Phase 1  Will involve a systematic review of the impact of assessment policy on practice at the University of Queensland over the last 10 years. Quantitative archival data will be used to document change in practice and student outcomes over time. This will be complemented by qualitative data from students, academics and administrative staff. The combined data will be explored at participatory workshops with internal and external reference groups and other stakeholders. Through this mechanism, key issues, intended and unintended consequences and specific problems with the current policy in its formulation, implementation and interpretation will be identified.

Phase 2 Will investigate alternative policies to address the target issues identified in Phase 1. It will include a comprehensive review of policies and practices elsewhere and field testing of policy alternatives.

Phase 3  Will again involve close collaboration with the reference groups and stakeholders to develop a set of guidelines and a step-by-step process for Australian universities to review their assessment policies.
