The ALTC has a budget of approximately $27 million to recognise, reward and support outstanding teaching and practice in higher education.

The Grants Scheme has three programs with a funding pool of $11 million in 2010. The programs are:

  • Leadership for Excellence in Learning and Teaching Program which supports systematic, structured and sustainable models of academic leadership in higher education at the disciplinary, cross-disciplinary and institutional levels
  • Priority Projects Program which addresses the identified priorities of assessment standards, assessment practices and reporting, curriculum renewal, teaching and learning spaces and internationalisation
  • Competitive Grants Program which supports issues of emerging and continuing importance, the diversity of the student body and innovation in learning and teaching including the role of new technologies.

Projects may be commissioned on a one off basis in response to an identified need.

Our Fellowship Scheme provides support for educators to work as National Teaching Fellows with funding up to $350,000 to undertake leadership activities with an international dimension. Teaching Fellows attract funding up to $100,000 for discipline or interdisciplinary-based activities.

Our Awards Scheme includes five categories with awards valued at $10,000 or $25,000, depending on the category. The most prestigious accolade, the Prime Minister’s Award for Australian University Teacher of the Year is valued at $50,000.  Funding of up to $3,000 per event is also available for conferences to invite award recipients to be featured presenters.
