Dr Carol Nicoll PSM

Dr Carol Nicoll took up the position of Chief Executive Officer at the Australian Learning and Teaching Council on 8 February 2010 when the ALTC’s foundation Executive Director Professor Richard Johnstone stepped down.

Dr Nicoll has a range of experience in the education sector, including as a secondary school teacher and university academic. She joined the Commonwealth public service in 1999 and held positions as head of the team that developed the higher education reform package, Our Universities: Backing Australia’s Future, manager of the Funding Branch in the Higher Education Group, Minister-Counsellor for Education, Science and Training (DEST’s senior representative in Europe, based in Brussels), Group Manager of the Industry Skills Development Group, and Group Manager of National Education System Group in the Department of Education, Employment and Workplace Relations.

She has degrees in Arts and Law, a Graduate Diploma in Education and a Master of Educational Administration from the University of Queensland, and a doctorate  from the University of British Columbia. She was awarded a Public Service Medal on Australia Day 2004 for outstanding public service.

Chair of the ALTC Board, Professor John Hay AC, welcomed Dr Nicoll’s appointment noting that she has been closely involved with some of the major reforms in higher education over the last decade including creating the policy context for the ALTC.

“Dr Nicoll was closely associated with setting up the ALTC and was also instrumental in developing the Australian Awards for University Teaching,” Professor Hay said. ■
