The Australian Learning and Teaching Council was established in August 2004 as a national focus for the enhancement of learning and teaching in higher education.
Prior to May 2008 the ALTC was named the Carrick Institute for Learning and Teaching in Higher Education after Sir John Carrick AC, the Commonwealth Minister for Education between 1975 and 1979.

Predecessor bodies

The Australian Government supported a number of initiatives to promote quality and excellence in university teaching before the ALTC was established. These initiatives include the Australian Universities Teaching Committee (AUTC) which operated between 2000 and 2004, the Committee for University Teaching and Staff Development (CUTSD) and the Committee for the Advancement of University Teaching (CAUT).

In preparation for the launch of the ALTC, the AUTC consulted widely and analysed comparable international initiatives before providing advice to the Minister. Three projects were commissioned by the Committee, two on the dissemination of project outcomes and one related to the new awards program, to provide advice to the ALTC.

ALTC is arranging to deposit the outputs (including project reports) of these predecessor organisations into a repository to ensure ongoing availability to the higher education sector. In the interim, please info [at] altc [dot] edu [dot] au (email the ALTC )
